Rain Affects Harvests

Wheat

Heavy rainfall is expected and for farmers in Oxford County it's the height of harvesting season.

OXFORD COUNTY- This season has been particularly wet for farmers. Agricultural operations are in the height of harvesting season and heavy rainfall is putting on extra pressure. One farmer from Woodstock, Valerie Hobbs says the past few days have been hectic trying to beat the rain

While rain is usually welcomed by many farmers, this years particularly wet season has Hobbs ready to see it go.

"We've had a fairly wet spring here already, spring and summer so the moisture really isn't welcome at this point."

Hobbs explains that constant wet weather can have a negative economic impact on operations who are in the middle of harvesting.

"We've had enough rain this summer, you certainly can have too much, with some crops you worry about disease pressure from having to much wet conditions a concern would be mold growth."

Wet conditions often make fields muddy and equipment is more likely to get stuck in the mud. For now farmers will have to wait it out. Fortunately Hobbs has a machine that helps dry certain crops.
