Red Scarves in Woodstock Commemorate World Aids Day

Several hand made red scarves have been placed inside Museum Square in Woodstock today to mark World Aids Day.

WOODSTOCK - Red Scarves are availbe to anyone who needs one today at Museum Square in Downtown Woodstock.

Oxford County Public Health is supporting the "Red Scarf Project" to Woodstock this year to honour World HIV/AIDS Day. Volunteers have tied red scarves, which were knit by volunteers, to trees and lamp posts in Museum Square.

Public Health Gayle Milne says they are trying to raise awareness.

"We do provide some of the statistics as well, so for example, it's estimated that 1 in 5 people who are HIV positive, do not know they are infected and that is because they have never had the testing done."

Milne says the hand made scarves are up for grabs and you are welcome to take them if you need one.

"Afterwards we will go around and pick up any scarves that might be left behind, often there is none, or just one or two left, so people certainly do seem to appreciate the hand made scarves and they do take them."

She adds if you do take a scarf, they do ask you to keep the conversation going about the illness.

The scarves symbolize the red ribbons often associated with HIV/AIDS awareness. World AIDS Day is marked on December 1 each year. 36.7 million people around the world are living with HIV/AIDS, and more than 1.0 million people died from AIDS-related causes in 2016.
