Relay for Life

The 15th annual event is set to go later today at College Avenue Secondary School

WOODSTOCK - Celebrate - Remember - Fight Back.

Those are the words used to describe the Relay for Life, in support of the Canadian Cancer Society.

The 15th Annual Relay in Woodstock is Friday at CASS (College Avenue Secondary School) where participants will walk for 12 hours in honour and memory of those affected by cancer.

Organizers and committee members are extending the invitation to the community to come and see what the Relay For Life is all about.  Co-Chair Sandy Smith points out that the gates are open for people to start arriving in the late afternoon with the Opening Ceremonies getting underway around 6:30 pm.  "The public is just welcomed to be there to get a feel for the atmosphere, the fun that all the teams are having, you're certainly welcomed to walk the track a little bit just to get a feel for what it's like and we hope that we'll sort of peak your interest for possibly getting yourself involved next year."

This year's theme is "Through The Decades" and the committee set their fundraising goal at $300,000.

The event includes a Children's Tent, Fight Back Zone, silent auction, guest speakers and live entertainment.  The walk begins with the Survivor's Lap just before 7:00 pm.  "Very moving to watch survivors from young children to old people who've beat cancer, who've survived it.  They do a symbolic first lap and it's a very, very moving event."

The luminary ceremony will begin around 9:30 pm when hundreds of candles will be lit around the track and burn through the night in honour or in memory of those who have lived or are living with cancer.  The public is welcomed to attend the ceremony and are invited to purchase luminaries at the event Friday night.
