Respect the Game and Have Fun

The Woodstock Community Complex has new signs in place to remind the public to be respectful

WOODSTOCK - "Respect the game and have fun!"

This message now stands emblazoned on a sign in the Woodstock Community Complex. A stark reminder to parents that those players on the ice are just kids out there to have a good time.

City Councillor Shawn Shapton help bring this sign into being, and says he hopes it will create positive change. "The signs are really about reminding parents and grandparents, and truthfully all adults that the kids are just there to have fun. I know sometimes the games can get heated and the competitiveness of any sport can get overwhelming, but ultimately it to remind them that it's just a game."

Shapton says he couldn't have gotten this project on its feet on his own. "I worked in collaboration with another citizen - Sean McNamara - we sat down and really looked at some things we saw on the internet as far as verabge and how that goes. And then of course the next step was to work closely with Brian Connors and Darren Hall and make sure the verbage was proper for a public facility."

All parents are encouraged to look at that sign and really consider their words before speaking."I hope that all the parents do pay attention - that this on the radar now and we're recognizing it as not just a problem in the city of Woodstock, but a problem throughout most hockey facilities, so let's hope we can create some positive change," says Shapton.
