Sex Ed Protest Hits Close to Home

15 schools in the Thames Valley District School Board have students sitting out of class this week as part of the protest against the sex education curriculum.

Hundreds of parents across the Province are taking their kid out of school this week to protest Ontario's new sexual education curriculum.
15 schools in the Thames Valley District School Board have students sitting out of class this week as part of the protest.
Superintendent of Student Achievement Don Macpherson says they don't have exact numbers as to how many students are staying home locally.
He adds at least 15 schools in the board have reported kids will be staying home this week and the numbers vary between 1-6 families at each school.
Some parents are upset with the new curriculum based on religious grounds, saying lessons involving sexual orientation, gender identity and masturbation don't align with their faith based values.
Macpherson says the old curriculum was written in 1998 and didn't touch on things like social media and Internet safety.
He adds it really focuses on health decision making and it does not have anything related to teaching how to do thing or teaching young children about very explicit sexual information and is very well laid out in terms of age appropriateness.
Students who miss time from school will be allowed to make up tests and the schools will work with the kids to make sure they get caught up on the things they missed.
