Shared Court Cost Decision Delayed

A decision on a potential shared court security funding model has been deferred to a future council meeting.

WOODSTOCK - Oxford County council has deferred a decision on a new shared court security funding model.

Right now the City of Woodstock and Woodstock Police are responsible for the court costs, security, prisoner travel, despite the fact that the service is used county wide. Warden David Mayberry explains the proposed changes he was making to the current model.

"The cost of the court security and prisoner transportation be amalgamated into one cost and that any income that is received currently would be subtracted from that and that the county would pick up the full cost. Recognizing that the courts role is really for the whole of the County and all of us should share in the cost of that on some fair and equitable basis. The suggestion from some on council was that the court actually does bring in some income, each municipality has their own advantages and disadvantages, however I see this as a different equity and I think we should look at it that way."

Mayor of Tillsonburg Stephen Molnar was against the proposal and used the money from the OLG slots as an example, saying everyone in Oxford contributes to those funds, however the City of the Woodstock is the only one one benefits from them. A decision on a potential shared court security funding model will take place at a future council meeting.
