Skate Park Goers Encouraged to Wear Helmets

Only good results can come out of wearing a helmet. Safe Kids Canada even finds that when properly worn, helmets reduce the risk for serious head injury by 85%. Members of Safe Communities Woodstock and Oxford County Injury Prevention Team were checking helmets and encouraging the use of protective equipment at Southside's skate park Wednesday evening. Lorna Boratto with the Injury Prevention Team says it only takes one fall: "Nobody wants to have a head injury. We've only got one head and we need to do everything we can to protect it, but still have fun." One of the skaters wearing a helmet was Dean Hartley (seen in photo on right). He's trying to prevent another head injury: "Well I had a concussion before, and I didn't want to have another one. So I just started wearing a helmet, and now I don't." Those caught wearing a helmet were awarded with an ice cream coupon, while those without one were given a chance to get properly fitted with a free one.
