Long-time South-West Oxford Councillor Anne Vanhoucke passed away unexpectedly on Friday.

SOUTH-WEST OXFORD - South-West Oxford is mourning the loss of one of their longest sitting council members.

Anne Vanhoucke passed away unexpectedly on Friday December 22nd, just three days before Christmas. She was 73 years old.

Mayor David Mayberry says her presence will be missed in council chambers.

"Whether she agreed with you or not she was willing to share her opinions and had an expectation that others would as well. I think that's what usually makes a good councillor, none of us are 100 percent right but we are required by the job to sort of express an opinion and try and determine what's best for the community and I think Anne always tried to do that."

Vanhoucke has been the councillor of Ward 1 for 14 years, representing the Brownsville area. She was a member of the Brownsville Hall Committee, the Fire and Strategic Planning Steering Committee, the Engage and Inform Committee and was Chair of the land use planning SWOX 2030 working group.

Mayberry says she was very passionate about the environment.

"Anne was very committed to council, to the work of council and certainly had a key interest in environmental issues. The fact that they ran a garden centre, it was part of her passion but she was also committed to the Catfish Creek Conservation Authority as well."

She owned and operated the Vanhoucke Country Garden Nursery on on Ostrander Road with her husband Roger.

The public will pay their respects at St Mary's Roman Catholic Church located at 51 Venison Street West in Tillsonburg tomorrow. Visitation will begin at 9am and the Mass will start at 11am.
