Southwestern Public Health Provides Links to Federal Party Health Platforms

Southwestern Public Health, which includes Oxford County is asking voters to consider the link between Political Policy and health for this upcoming election.

OXFORD COUNTY - Southwestern Public Health, which includes Oxford County is asking voters to consider the link between Political Policy and health for this upcoming election.

Program Director of Foundational Standards and the Chief Nursing Officer Cathie Walker says they want residents in Elgin, Oxford and the City of St. Thomas to consider how the votes they cast may impact the community’s health.

“Most of the conditions in our communities – such as social belonging, education, income and housing – are not “fixed,” they are influenced by the policies and legislation of our government. We're asking people to look at the platforms of all political parties and consider how the proposed ideas might impact health for them personally, as well as for the community they live
in.”

Walker says they understand that everyone has a few issues that are very important to us personally.

“Maybe we've struggled to find an affordable apartment. Maybe a lack of public transit has made us feel isolated from social activities. We're hoping to draw a connection between our every day lives in Elgin and Oxford Counties, and the ideas put forth by the local candidates.”

The Health Unit has compiled information about some of the influencers of health in our local communities on its website, as well as provided links to the political party platforms and the names of the candidates in each of the ridings in the region it serves.
