Speaking Out

After his sister was killed by her estranged husband, domestic violence awareness became a priority for Rob Alexander.

OXFORD COUNTY - Domestic violence was pushed to the forefront of Rob Alexander's mind on August 8th, 2005.

Alexander's sister Lois Mordue was stabbed to death by her estranged husband after she expressed her desire for a divorce and involvement with another man. Alexander says it was the classic case of 'if he couldn't have her, nobody could.'

The effect of his sister's death caused Alexander to seek solace in helping women and he began taking part in organizations that promoted domestic abuse awareness.

In the past few months domestic violence has become highly publicized especially amongst professional athletes. The NFL has cracked down on athletes like Ray Rice for domestic assault. Alexander started to notice men becoming involved in professional sport campaigns that advocate against domestic violence.

"The No More campaign which is an NFL campaign by players on T.V-- now the ads when the football game is on there are these big black and white men standing up...talking about how it's not right (domestic violence)," Alexander adds this is a long time coming, "now they've got a male audience listening to males who are their idols speaking out about domestic violence which has been desperately been needed for years."

Alexander says that one of the hardest parts of reversing domestic violence is getting men involved. He sees the professional sporting campaings as game changing.

"Just the fact that powerful men are finally starting to get involved, I think it's gotta be men who are respected by other men and pro athletes seems to be ultimate way to send that message."

"I'm just happy that one of my issues was getting men involved and now I see what the NFL is doing and I think that's great."
