Special Olympians Torch Run Lights Up Woodstock

Woodstonians are encouraged to line the route and cheer on our Special Olympians during a torch run on Saturday.

WOODSTOCK - The Woodstock Police are joining our Special Olympians for a torch run to celebrate all they've accomplished.

The run will be Saturday June 4th with the first group leaving the Police Station on Dundas street at 11:30 a.m. while the second group leaves the Heart FM Studios at the same time. Both groups will meet up at Boston Pizza for celebratory pizza and pop.

Auxiliary Staff Sergeant Deb Klemp with the Woodstock Police Services encourages people to line the route and show their support.

"These individuals are always busy. They are always doing stuff. You know them in the community. They are always at hockey games and baseball games and they have their own teams. This is important because it makes them recognizable. These individuals work so hard and sometimes they don't get the credit. This is very important for them to be noticed and seen."

Klemp says both the athletes and the officers gain a lot from their partnership.

"I think when you actually go to an event and you see the comradery and see the special Olympians and how important it is to them to be involved with the police because they look up to the police officers. However, we look up to them much more, it's just the kind networking that we do."

Klemp says the biggest way you can show support is being on the sidelines and honk your horn as they go by. "These Olympians thrive on that." The route is from the Police Station on Dundas, turning on Wilson, and then all the way to the Boston Pizza on Norwich.

There may be some minor traffic slowdowns as the athletes make their way to Boston Pizza, so they ask motorists to please be patient and respectful.
