Spring Gardening in Oxford County

Jim Van Dyk of Van Dyk's Greenhouses has some tips for gardeners who are ready to get their hands dirty.

WOODSTOCK - Now that spring is here many people are eager to start gardening.

Local horticultural expert, Jim Van Dyk talks about what folks should be thinking of when deciding when and what to plant.

"They should be thinking about that ice storm we had last weekend. There are some plants that could be planted like perennials that are hardened off. A good indicator of when you should plant those kind of things is when your grass starts growing."

Van Dyk says how you can keep your grass healthy and green.

"Raking of course! I would avoid getting somebody to roll it because rolling it just packs it down. It would be a good idea to get it cored, that would involve putting holes in your grass with a drum that has spikes in it. That will be able to let the nutrients and the water go down into your grass."

Van Dyk's Greenhouses has been providing expert gardening advice to Oxford County residents for nearly 39 years.
