Staying Cool

SWPH says places like libraries, arenas and other public buildings are great places for the public to seek relief from the heat.

OXFORD COUNTY - With the heat warning in effect, Southwestern Public Health is offering tips on how you can stay cool. A heat warning will be declared by the health unit when lots of exposure to outdoor conditions could prove dangerous to public health.

SWPH is notified by Environment and Climate Change Canada’s meteorological services when there is an impending heat event forecast for our area.  Public Health will then issue a Heat Warning or Extended Heat Warning based how it'll long it'll be and the intensity of the conditions: Heat Warning – when forecast temperatures are expected to be at least 31°C and overnight temperatures are at or above 20°C for two days or the Humidex is forecasted to be at least 40°C for two days. Extended Heat Warning – When forecast temperatures are expected to be at least 31°C and overnight temperatures are above 20°C for three or more days or Humidex is at least 40°C for three or more days.

A heat warning or extended heat warning will be posted on Southwestern Public Health’s website and social media, and will be issued to local media, child care providers and other community partners. SWPH says places like libraries, arenas and other public buildings are great places for the public to seek relief from the heat. Things like air conditioning, seating and water are typically found in these places and are managed by each city, town or township. These locations can be designated as Cooling Centres and hours may be extended if there is a community need when a heat warning is issued.

The local health unit says the combination of high heat and high humidity can be dangerous. If anyone experiences physical distress because of extreme temperatures should get medical attention immediately, either by calling 911 or by going to the nearest emergency department.

Here are some of the cooling centres available in the region. Call your local municipality for more information.
