STIs Are Not A Problem In Oxford, But You Should Still Get Checked

OXFORD COUNTY - Oxford County Public Health are reminding the public to be safe.

OXFORD COUNTY - Oxford County Public Health are reminding the public to be safe.

Supervisor in Health Protection with Oxford County Public Health, Joanne Andrews, explains The Top 10 Campaign. "The Top 10 Campaign highlights reasons why someone should investigate getting tested for a sexually transmitted infection.  It is to appeal to the 15-24 year olds and that could be having sex without a condom or having multiple partners, and hopefully we can highlight some of those reasons."

STI's can affect you in many different ways, and Andrews discusses how the rate of those affect by STI's are in the county. "The rate of sexually transmitted infections is fairly stable in Oxford County, we do have a lower rate of infections than the rest of the province.  It is a disease that does get reported to public health and that gives the opportunity to follow up with people and make sure they are getting the right treatment, and also make sure their partners are getting treated as well."

Andrews knows it is important to be on the look out for any symptoms and where to get tested.  "I think the main thing that people should be aware of is that they may not have any symptoms, common symptoms would be pain with urination, itching, or lower abdominal pain.  Testing for sexually transmitted infections is free and you can be tested at our family health care provider, or at the sexual health care clinic here at Oxford County Public Health."
