Stopping the Whistle

One of the crossings in question

Innerkip residents looking for a train whistle ban

Some residents in Innerkip are tired of hearing trains blow their whistles when coming through town.

East Zorra Tavistock Council has been asked by members of the community to look at a whistle ban and additional protection at the train crossings.

Mayor Don McKay says the CP train crosses at three points in Innerkip.

"None of those crossings have the gates and signals so it has to blow the whistle at each of those and because of the proximity at Innerkip it's not just three whistles at one stop, it's accumulation times three."

McKay says council needs to ensure they are doing their part for public safety but cost is also a factor.

"On a very small rural municipality we look at infrastructure costs, do we want to update a couple signals? Do we want to pave a couple kilometres of road? It really comes down to that sort of consideration."

Based on correspondence from CP back in 2008, the town was told the crossings would not qualify for a whistle ban based on train speed and present configuration and the cost of adding gates would be around $225,000 per crossing out of the municipality's pocket since the upgrades would be requested based solely on whistle cessation.

McKay says council will continue their talks with CP in hopes of a resolution.
