Students Climb For United Way

Oxford's six high schools took it step by step as they raised funds in support of the United Way.

Oxford County high schools stepped up to the challenge again this year.

The 10th Annual United Way Oxford Student Stair climb invaded the Woodstock Community Complex this morning.

Youth from the county's six high schools raised funds and climbed the stairs of Southwood Arena in support of the United Way Oxford.

United Way Executive Director Kelly Gilson was impressed yet again with the students hard work.  "It's our favourite event because it captures the spirit of kids.  These are amazing students in our community, they're great leaders, they're going to be really the leaders of tomorrow and I think they show that by their actions today.  They're just great kids and they raise a fortune."

Thames Valley School Board Trustee, Bill McKinnon once again got behind the event donating over $1,150 of his salary to the cause.  "We have to show our kids that we want to be involved as well, show that there's adults that are out here and supporting them and supporting what they're doing.  We had about 800 kids who are fantastic role models to their peers and their schools and they're the kind of kids that we want to make sure are going out into the community and doing things."

CASS, WCI, Huron Park, St Mary's, Glendale and IDCI all participated in Thursday's event.

Ingersoll walked away as the top fundraising school for the tenth time in a row, collectively raising $10,440.  CASS got to take the honours as the winners of the United Way Student Stair Climb games.

Three students were recognized for their fundraising efforts; Hayley Fairbairn of IDCI was the top individual fundraiser with $2186.55, Connor McArthur also of IDCI collected $500 and Abby Belleth of HPSS brought in $400 for the cause.

As a whole, the six schools and hundreds of students raised an amazing $21,440.52 for this year's event.
