Students Plan to Walk Out In Protest

Students from Woodstock high schools will be walking out of class at 9 a.m. to bring attention to the rash of youth suicides

WOODSTOCK - Hundreds of students and parents are expected to fill Museum Square in Woodstock for an unscheduled and unsanctioned student walkout.

They are protesting the reaction from the local school board on the rash of youth suicides in the community over the past 4 months.Students also believe their voices are going unheard in this very difficult matter.

Woodstock Police have sent out a notice to local business owners in the downtown core.

In the release they estimate anywhere from 150 to 500 students from all five high schools will attend and the numbers could rise. National media will likely be in the city as well and the walkout could disrupt traffic.

Police are planning on possibly closing down Finkle Street from Dundas to Simcoe, Market Street from Reeve to Simcoe, and potentially Dundas Street from Graham to Riddell if necessary to accommodate the students.

The street closures will be in place from 9 am to noon. Heart FM plans on attending the protest and will have more reaction this afternoon.
