Teen Tan Ban

Two Liberal Bills Take Aim at Tanning for Teens, and Fast Food

A bill that would ban minors from using tanning beds is up for a final vote in the Ontario legislature today.

If passed, it would stop the sale of tanning services to youth under the age of 18 and require operators to request identification from anyone who appears to be under 25.  The bill would also prohibit ads and marketing targeting minors and set steep fines of up to $25,000 for those who break the rules.  Operators would be required to put up signs about the ban and the health risks of tanning.

Meantime, it could become easier to count calories when you're eating on the go.

Ontario's Liberal government are promising to introduce legislation requiring large chain restaurants to put calories and other nutritional information on their menus.

They say they'll introduce a bill this winter after consulting with the food industry and health-care sector.  Health Minister Deb Matthews says she'll also seek advice on how to reduce the marketing of unhealthy food and drinks aimed at children.
