Teens Need To Understand The Dangers of Sexting

A 13 year old did the right thing and went to police after being asked to send sexually explicit photos to a stranger.

Parents are being reminded to talk to your kids about the dangers of Self-Peer Exploitation, otherwise known as sexting.

The message comes after a 13 year old from Norfolk County received sexually explicit images through social media. When the man requested photos back the teen told her parents who contacted police. OPP Constable Ed Sanchuk says in this case the teen did the right thing by contacting police, however he notes they are seeing more and more reports like this one.

"Teens need to realize the long and short term dangers of sending photographs of themselves, and those that distribute it need to understand the criminal ramifications of doing so and we're trying to tell parents that porn culture is becoming pop culture and often parents do not know that their kids are involved and it can be difficult to determine. Parents are encouraged to have honest and frank discussions with their kids, so be prepared to offer them some information if they need help. The Canadian Centre for Child Protection is a national charitable organization dedicated to the personal safety of children, with a goal to reduce child victimization. "

Sanchuk says police are seeing a marked increase in the number of reports involving youth being asked to send sexually explicit images or videos. In some cases the teens are being charged and if you share those images you can face serious consequences.

"Those who distribute it also need to be aware of the criminal ramifications of doing so. Once it’s out there, you can't get it back and you should not be embarrassed to speak to police about your concerns."
