Thinning Trees

The UTRCA is thinning 82 acres of trees in Zorra Township

ZORRA TOWNSHIP - A project is underway at Wildwood Conservation Area in Lakeside, known as plantation thinning to 82 acres of white pine and spruce trees.

"We go down every 4th row and remove the entire row," says  Marketing Specialist for the Upper Thames River Conservation Area Steve Sauder.  "These were plantations so they were planted in rows about about 24 years ago, a large machine goes in and takes each of the trees out.  The trees being removed will actually pay for the work that needs to happen to the help the forest.''

Sauder thinks this is the perfect time to complete this task.

"The ground is frozen which is a good opportunity to get in some of the plantations to allow sunlight down in so we can get more bio-diversity.  There are hardwood trees growing in the area, those seeds will fall so then we will start to get more hardwood trees as well as the white pine and white spruce plantations that we will be thinning."

This project is set to be completed soon.
