Too Many Batteries Getting Chucked in the Trash

A new survey finds used batteries are getting chucked into trash cans in Ontario because many people just don't know they should be recycled. The poll conducted for Stewardship Ontario found that more than one-third of those surveyed improperly disposed of used batteries. Nearly half of those putting batteries in the household trash say they don't know where to recycle them, while 39% say they didn't even know they shouldn't go in the regular garbage bin. Stewardship Ontario says people need to be aware that some batteries contain materials that could harm the environment and it's everyone's responsibility to ensure they are disposed of correctly. In Woodstock, you can bring your old batteries to drop off containers at Southside Pool, the Engineering Department on James St., or the Woodstock Library. There are also some commercial retailers, like Home Depot that recycle batteries.
