Torch Run

A group of Special Olympians from Woodstock completed their annual torch run Saturday

The Special Olympic torch has successfully completed it's journey.

A small group of local special Olympians jogged down Norwich Avenue in Woodstock Saturday as part of their annual torch run.

Local Special Olympic Coach Gary Farrington says the athletes get fired up about the event every year.

"It's a great time for everybody to get together. They go around and see their sponsors or family members. They look so forward to this walk, it's their biggest fundraiser of the year. They have got the police escorts and stuff, the sirens. It's quite a thrill for everyone involved."

"Cars going past honking and blowing their horns and waving, they just love it. It's a moment of fame going down that walk like that. It's enjoyable by everybody."

Farrington says while there is no set fundraising goal, last year's run raised four thousand dollars which went back into the nine sports programs offered to the athletes.

"Soccer, softball, curling, 5 and 10 pin bowling, swimming, skating and power lifting."
