County Council puts up $100,000 for the right ideas to draw tourism to Oxford

Oxford County's new Tourism Specialist is walking into a nice situation.

Meredith Maywood takes over the position on a full-time basis in January, and will have an extra $100,000 to spend in the New Year.

Last night, Oxford County Council approved adding $100-grand to the Tourism budget, contingent on new ideas to spend it.

Tillsonburg Mayor John Lessif made a push for the extra cash.  "We can't stand still with our thinking, nor can we stand still with the amount of money that we spend to promote Oxford County.   There's no guarantee that money will be spent, but it provides the Manager an opportunity to do some dreaming as to where she can take Oxford County with additional funds supporting whatever initiatives she comes up with."

The money would be taken out of reserve funds, which were shown last night to be in the $109-117-million range with $21-million in general reserves.  The rest is earmarked for specific departments like Public Works and new development.

Council also make a cut on new spending at Monday night's meeting.  $40,000 was cut from $180,000 budgeted for new initiatives coming out of the Strategic Plan.

Council could finalize the budget at their regular meeting next week.
