Town Of Paris Getting Closer To Keeping Old Town Hall

PARIS - The Society for the Preservation of Paris Architectural Heritage and the County of Brant are one step closer to saving Old Town Hall in Paris.

PARIS - The Society for the Preservation of Paris Architectural Heritage and the County of Brant are one step closer to saving Old Town Hall in Paris.

Linda Schuyler and Stephen Stohn appeared at a Brant County council meeting to lend their support to the campaign to save the old gothic building. Mayor Ron Eddy says if you don't recognize Linda Schuyler's name, you might be familiar with her work. "She's the author of the Degrassi series on TV. Her name is Linda Schuyler and she's the daughter of the former mayor of Paris Jack Bawcutt." Schuyler is a co-creator and producer of the series.

"The County of Brant has been given a gift of one million dollars of which 750 000 can be used for the purchase of it and the purchase price is 1.1 million dollars and we have an agreement with the present owner for the purchase of it for that amount," Eddy says.

Eddy notes this is no small undertaking and there is still a lot of work to be done: "It is going to be very costly - several million dollars - to restore it for use because it is old and it has deteriorated. So we will be launching a campaign to go forward to restore it."

The building is located on Burwell street and the Society for the Preservation of Paris Architectural Heritage plans to convert it into a multi-use community centre.
