Travel Safely This Holiday Season

If you're getting ready for a road trip for Christmas or New Year's Eve, make sure you're prepared for all kinds of weather.

If your Christmas and New Year's plans include travelling, the OPP are reminding you to be careful on the roadways.

Although there's no snow here, OPP Constable Lisa Narancsik says motorists should be aware some areas will be seeing a white Christmas. "Make sure they're still prepared in case it does snow. I know the predictions are for nice warm weather but make sure that the vehicles are still winterized and you have all those extra things: blankets, candles, food, maps, flashlights. Make sure that they have all of those extra things in case something were to happen."

If you haven't already put on your winter tires, but you know you'll be travelling through areas that might see some snowfall you might want to consider it. "I know that people maybe haven't put their winter tires on because the warm weather is fooling us, but just prepare yourself for travelling," Narancsik says. "And if they do happen to be travelling to an area where there is snow, make sure they are adjusting their driving behaviour; staying alert, slowing down, and staying in control, giving themselves space when they're travelling on these snowy roadways."

Family road trips can be fun, but rowdy kids in the backseat can also pose a distraction on the road. "Give your children something to occupy themselves so that they're not fussing if you have a long road trip." Narancsik says planning ahead is key. "Organize yourself so the kids are satisfied and not distracting you from your driving. Make sure that you have everything that they may need - if they may need something to eat, drink - again, just being organized before you head out."
