Unifor Pushes Toyota to Unionize

Unifor is trying to convince Toyota workers to unionize - they were in Woodstock earlier this week, and will be at the Cambridge location this weekend.

WOODSTOCK/CAMBRIDGE - Unifor is ramping up efforts to unionize 7 500 Toyota workers at plants in Cambridge and Woodstock.

The union was at the Woodstock plant on Wednesday handing out leaflets and providing workers with information. They need to get 40% of the employees at Toyota to sign a union card in order to file an application to have a vote to form a union. Unifor thought they had the 40% last year but backed out when they found out Toyota had more than 7 500 employees, and not the 6 000 they had estimated. National Rep with Unifor Bob Van Cleef tells Heart FM they are going to have a push to sign up employees this weekend in Cambridge handing out information and encouraging employees to come to a family barbeque the union is hosting nearby.

Van Cleef says they have gotten a lot of interest from employees after it was announced the Toyota plant will stop making the popular Corolla model. "This obviously impacts the Woodstock workers because, just for example, you're going to have Woodstock workers that are going to transfer to Cambridge if there are reductions, or there is going to be workers from Cambridge transferred to Woodstock. And we're saying this is an opportunity, by joining the union, that they can sit across the table and work out what that procedure is going to be."
