Tooth paste, toilet paper and non perishable food items will be donated to Domestic Abuse Services Oxford (DASO) and they're being collected at the Winchester Street Public School from now until November 1st.

WOODSTOCK - Winchester Street Public School is hosting We Scare Hunger Campaign Food Drive once again this year.

Grade 4/5 teacher Heather Reid says the campaign supports Domestic Abuse Services Oxford (DASO) and is a good way for the kids to help give to the community and the people who need help

"We have a club at the school called We Are Winchester for all of our student leaders and every October we run the We Scare Hunger Campaign which is run through the organization WE founded by Craig Kielburger, And it is a chance for us to raise and collect as many non perishable food items or items such as tooth brushes, tooth paste, toilet paper, diapers as we can for the month and we have chosen to donate all of our items to DASO at the end of the month because DASO is in Winchester's area. So if children are there with their moms then they will come to Winchester while staying in DASO."

The school tries to make it fun for the kids to donate by making events like their Halloween Dance where admission is two non perishable food items, and the mini competitions they have throughout the school to try and see who can donate the most food items.

Last year over 1,000 items were donated and they are hoping to go above and beyond that goal this year, all to support DASO.

Reid adds that the kids will also be asked to collect non perishable food items while out Trick-or-Treating.

"This year we have run it as a month long campaign where we're asking students all month to donate items. We have a table set up outside of our office and the idea is that any student can bring in items or members of the public are welcome to drop by the school and drop them off at our front office. And then on Halloween we're also asking students in the Winchester area to trick or treat for non perishable food items because families who live in the Winchester area might have extra cans of soup or soap laying around. So students are going to come around asking for that as well and we are looking for anything that might be useful at the shelter."

Items will be accepted now until November 1st from 9:30 AM to 4 PM at Winchester Street Public School.
