Woodstock Celebrates Canada Day with a Bang

Southside Park will be a hub for all kinds of Canada Day events for the whole family.

WOODSTOCK - July 1st marks our country's 148th birthday and a larger celebration than ever before is being prepared in Southside Park to recognize the occasion.  Activities will be taking place in the park starting at 2pm with the grand finale being a firework display to begin at dusk that is promising to be the largest show in the area. Manager of Communication and Special Events for Woodstock Brad Janssen outlines activities residents can look forward to:  "We're looking forward to a big program, probably more entertainment then we have enjoyed in recent years. There is going to be entertainment from 2 right through 'til when the fireworks start.  We have food trucks, a good variety, we have an ice cream truck, we have got crafters, more crafters than we ever have had for this event, and it is going to be a great day to celebrate Canada's birthday."

The City is prepared to acknowledge Canada's birthday with a big bang as Janssen has teamed up with a group from Niagara Falls to provide a spectacular display of fireworks. "We put on about a $20 000 display and fireworks are about $1 000 a minute.  This will be the best show this side of Niagara Falls. We are going to be able to see them from a variety of different vantage points from all over the Friendly City.  Bring your lawn chairs, bring your blankets, and enjoy the best fireworks display of the year."

Janssen wants parents to be informed of all the fun events that are planned for the kids. "On the west diamond we will have all kinds of inflatables and mechanical rides. We have pony rides so that is always a crowd pleaser.  You are going to be enjoying the likes of the Fire Guy, he is a professional busker that obviously works with fire, we have Bex in Motion, she is a hula hoop professional. Just keep in mind that if you are going to go down to the park you will have to go in the north end."

The tradition continues with the giant Canada Day Cake that the public can enjoy on top of everything else happening in Southside Park on Wednesday.
You can find a complete listing of all the firework displays in Oxford on Wednesday on events page.
