Woodstock Fire Department Are Giving Tips For Firework Safety

The Woodstock Fire Department would like to remind the public, that this is the only night this weekend you can light fireworks.

WOODSTOCK - It's Canada Day so fireworks will be lighting up the sky this evening!

The Woodstock Fire Department would like to remind the public, that this is the only night this weekend you can light fireworks. If you light them any other day, you could be fined.

Public Information Coordinator Lisa Woods says people should use common sense, especially when lighting fireworks.

"We want people to be safe doing that and enjoying them so we want to make sure that they pick a wide clear site away from over head obstacles, if it's windy don't consider using them that day. Make sure they have a responsible individual that is able to be in charge of the fireworks."

Here's a list of more firework safety tips:

- Use a good firing base like a pail or wheelbarrow filled with dirt or sand
- Never light a firework in your hand or hold a lit firework (exception of sparklers)
- Always light the tip of the fuse
- Keep a pail of water nearby and be sure to dispose of use fireworks and debris in water
- NEVER try to re-light a firework or fix a defective firework

Although fireworks can only be lit during the evening of July 1st, fires can be enjoyed all weekend long weather permitting.

Public Information Coordinator Lisa Woods tells us when you shouldn't have a fire.

"If the wind is over 10km you should refrain, those are going to send the sparks and ash over to your neighbour's house and potentially start a fire."

Here are some more bonfire safety tips:

- Make sure you have an open air burning permit beforehand
- Fire pits need to be 2x2 in size and must have a mesh covering
- You must have four metres from your property lines or a combustible structure or object
- Make sure to put the fire out when you are done

If you light a fire in your backyard without the proper permit you can be fined $50. If you have the proper permit but are not responsible with your fire you can be fined up to $450.

If you are outside the City of Woodstock, you may be under different conditions, such as the Open Air Burn Ban. Check with your individual fire department to see is required in your area.
