Woodstock Honours Local Students

Both students recognized are described as deserving young women, who have obtained impressive grades and give back to the community.

WOODSTOCK - The Student Civic Awards of Excellence were handed out recently.

Woodstock Mayor Trevor Birtch and Councillor Connie Lauder were on hand to do the honours in council chambers Friday night.

This year's recipients are Ardena Basic and Emma Jull.

Both are described as deserving young women, who have obtained impressive grades and give back to the community.

On the City of Woodstock's Facebook page, the Head of the English Department at Woodstock Collegiate Institute, Ms. Allison Mitchell describes Ardena's character.

“Ardena is one of the most motivated, dedicated, and hardworking students I have met in my 20 years of teaching. She is always looking for ways to improve and to challenge herself so that she can make the most out of every learning experience. She challenged herself by taking Enrichment and AP English for her senior English credits. Enrichment English students are expected to think critically, delve deeper into topics, and take on a heavier workload than regular University English courses. Ardena thrived in this environment even though Ardena would not consider English her strongest subject.”

In the fall of 2020 she will be attending McMaster University in the Integrated Business and Humanities program.

It isn't just academics that interest Emma, she is also focused on giving back and helping others. Emma has held many positions throughout the years on student council, as well as being an integral member of the Knights LEADing the Way Leadership program.

Emma was an integral part in the success of the 2019 #GROWgirlsOXFORD event. This event transforms the lives of girls in Oxford County. Emma was a co-organizer and co-host of the event. She rose to the challenge of organizing the event which was focused on supporting Grade 9 female-identified students across Oxford County.  For her work on this event she was recognized and received the 2020 Youth AppreSHeation Award on International Women’s Day.

In the fall of 2020 she will be attending the University of Guelph in the Bachelor of Commerce program.
