Woodstock Rinks Need Some Help To Reach The Playoffs

The Balsdon rink will need to win out and get some help to make the playoffs after losing a close game to Rachel Homan this morning, while the men are all but eliminated at the Ontario Curling Championships.

UPDATE: Both Woodstock rinks have officially been eliminated from playoff contention at the Provincial curling championships in Cornwall. Team Kean on the men's side was eliminated on Thursday morning and Team Balsdon for the ladies was eliminated last night. On the men's side, Team Epping has clinched the top seed and will get an automatic birth in the final. For the ladies the team led by Skip Rachel Homan have clinched the top spot and will also get an automatic bid to the final.

WOODSTOCK - It was a tough loss for Team Balsdon at the Ontario Scotties this morning in Cornwall.

They lost a close game to the team skipped by Rachel Homan. Team Homan has been undefeated so far at the Ontario Scotties. Team Balsdon represents the Woodstock Curling Club and features local curler Rachelle Strybosch who is the second on the team. She says they can take away a lot of positives from this mornings game.

"Despite losing, we felt like we had a really good game, the four of us game out and played one of our better games of the week, so it is nice to just keep building and get better each game, that is what you hope for. It was nice to have a close game against a team of that calibre, we didn't feel out of place, we felt like we were able to keep up to them."

Only the top three rinks will make the playoffs and have a chance to represent Ontario at the Scotty Tournament of Hearts. Team Balsdon will need to win their next three games in order to make the playoffs and they will need some help from other teams as well.

Strybosch says they are just going to take it one game at a time.

"Basically it is a do or die situation for us, but we are just going to take it one game at a time, can't really look to far ahead and hopefully build on from this morning, get one win under our belt and take it from there."

Over on the men's side at the Provincial Championships, Team Kean representing Woodstock has been eliminated from playoff contention. They currently have a 1 and 4 record after winning their first game last night. Team Kean features two players from Woodstock in skip Mark Kean and third Charlie Richard.

Strybosch says they do feel a lot of camaraderie with the other Woodstock rink, as both the men's and ladies championships are happening at the rink in Cornwall.

"It's awesome, we were all kind of in that junior program at the Woodstock curling centre, so it is great to see that we have three of us competing at this level now. It just goes to show that if you get the kids starting young, hopefully they like and it you never know where curling can take you, we mainly just pass them in the hallways but we have run into them a few times this week."
