Woodstock's Own Navy Vets Reach A New Milestone

The local Woodstock hockey team celebrate 50 years of shooting pucks into the net.

WOODSTOCK - The Navy Vets are celebrating their landmark 50th anniversary this season.

Founder of the Woodstock Navy Vets, Sam Keeping, says it all started with the love of the game,  "I started this team in 1965, I couldn't play hockey myself but I thought that I have to help people play hockey and I needed something to do."

Cam Roberts was the goalie for the Navy Vets from 1968 until 1972 and relived a favourite memory from almost 45 year ago. "It was Sam's team - we beat out Oakville in 7 games that was Woodstock's first ride in a fire truck since Bobby Hull won the championship in Junior B on the Woodstock Warriors. It was probably Keeping's best year because that is what he built as a builder for junior hockey."

Right winger from the mid 1970's, Ron Paton, spoke to Heart FM about how playing hockey was a family affair, "Just being a Navy Vet, I played with all my brothers which was four of us playing for the same team, so we moved up the ladder and there was an experience. Just in general being overall with players and guys you have known throughout the years, and I still play with those players today."

President Devon Young says as they move forward, the Navy Vets hope to continue to be a pillar of excellance in our community.

Going into the new year, they currently sit in 6th place in the league with 27 points and a 12 -14- 3 record.

The next game is January 3rd when they travel to face-off against Wellesley.
