Youth in Policing Initiative Returns for Another Year

The Woodstock Police are now accepting applications for their Youth In Policing program. This program offers a paid summer position to a Woodstock youth.

WOODSTOCK - The Youth in Policing initiative hopes to encourage young people to consider policing as a career, while helping them make a little money over the summer.

The Woodstock Police Service is accepting applications from students between 15 - 18 years of age. Candidates must currently be living in Woodstock and returning to a Woodstock high school in September. They must also be deemed a 'youth at risk.' Community Service officer with the Woodstock Police Service, Constable Steve McEwen says this refers to someone whose background places them 'at risk' of future offending or victimization because of their environmental, social, or family conditions.

Constable McEwen says he has seen the positive impact this program has had in the past. "We actually did it last year. We had one student that we selected. We interviewed about 5 or 6 candidates, and selected one from that. This person is considering police as a career, so it's something that they can put on their resume, learn some things along the way and it's positive engagement with the police, absolutely."

The successful candidate will be performing many different tasks; helping out at summer camps, office work, graffiti removal, and assisting the community service officer.

This position is a paid opportunity, and it runs for eight weeks starting Monday July 6th, and ending Friday August 28th.

The application can be found on the Woodstock Police's website.
