Zero Waste Remains The Hot Topic

A new guide has been released to Oxford County residents, walking them through how they can host a zero waste event like the Canterbury Folk Festival.

OXFORD COUNTY - The newest installment of the Future Oxford Speaker Series was all about how to host a waste free event.

Mariela Mcilwraith, the Director of Sustainability with the Events Industry Council was the guest speaker at the Quality Hotel and Suites last night. She co-wrote the book co-wrote the book "Meet Better: 167 Easy Ways to Make Your Events More Environmentally and Socially responsible."

She talked about ways you cut trash out of your next event.

"Looking at a number of different strategies starting from how you might look at using less to begin with, what are some options of things you can eliminate from your event and also have a high quality program, to looking at different things you can do with your materials following your event; whether that be upcycling practises, recycling or composting."

The event also introduced the Zero Waste Event Planning Book for Oxford County residents. CAO Peter Crockett outlines what's included.

"What you can do before the event in terms of planning, what you can plan for during the event to help address waste and then what you can do after the event to ensure that your plan has been achieved and you get to where you want to get to."
