Attack U13

Oxford Attack Under 13 Bantam Girls played first tournament of the season over the weekend.

DUNDAS - The season opening tournament of the year for the Oxford Attack Under 13 Bantam Girls resulted in some very close games en route to a deceiving 1-3 record against a strong field of ‘AA’ calibre Ontario Basketball Association teams.

The Attack opened the tournament against the eventual tourney champion Tecumseh Saints and came out very flat, losing 26-9.  The Attack played good defence but could not get their brand new motion offence on track.

The Attack next faced the Brantford CYO Falcons and raced out to 9-1 lead after the first quarter with Emma Chevers hitting 3 of 4 free throws.  The Attack swarmed the Falcons with great team defence to complete a total team win 37-15.  Emma Hagen-Johnson hit the first 3-point shot for the Attack girls this year while Amanda Witmer and Brianne Kunderman chipped in 6 points each.  Alexis Birch had numerous assists as the in-bounder on out of bound scoring plays all weekend long.

To complete pool play the Attack squared off against their nemesis from last season in the Flamborough Fire and battled right to the end narrowly losing in the dying seconds 34-32.  Beth Ewing demonstrated spirited play from her point guard position netting 4 points from hard driving layups.  Jaime Oliver contributed 5 points and solid play in final minutes of a close, intense game.  Jaime Magoffin led the Attack comeback in the final minutes spearheading an intense full court press and notched 4 of her 8 points from steals to tie the game.  The Fire nailed 2 free throws in the dying seconds to seal the win in a closely contested game.

The Attack played the Port Colborne Hornets in their final game and faced a tough 2-3 zone for the first time ever in their OBA basketball careers and narrowly fell 24-22.  Zones are allowed beginning in the U13 OBA age groups.  The Attack struggled with their offence against the Hornet zone but also played great defence themselves keeping the score very low for both teams.  Jaycee Gilbert was spectacular on defence as a first year player for the Attack.  Hannah Cowan had her best game of the weekend with 9 points and numerous rebounds and Leia Carroll had a crucial basket in the second half to keep the game close.  The Attack narrowly missed a designed 3-point shot from a sideline out of bounds play to go ahead for the win.

The Attack played the Stratford Revolution earlier in the week and came away with a solid 42-8 victory.  Olivia Kirkwood played admirably in her first game ever for the Attack from her point guard position.  Larissa Bayliss had multiple fast break layups as the Attack out-ran the Revolution from start to finish.

The Oxford Attack U13 girls welcomed 6 new players to their team this season.  Next up for the Attack is a home friendly tournament on Saturday December 13 at École Secondaire Notre Dame in Woodstock.  The Attack play at 9:00 am, 10:30 am and 4:00 pm.
