And part of the reason it works so well is because it knows exactly how ridiculous that is.

And it’s no wonder this show capitalizes so well on taking those long held Archie conventions and flipping our expectations right out of the park – veteran writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa is at the helm of Riverdale. His work on Afterlife with Archie and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina has been artfully breaking the rules for a while now.

But I’m getting ahead of myself.

Life With Archie

If I’m going to talk about the deliciously twisted things going on in the Archie-verse right now, we have to begin where things started to take a more serious turn.

The big question has always been ‘Who will he choose?’ Down-to-earth tomboy Betty or rich gal Veronica?

The answer?

Both.

Well according to Life with Archie anyway. In 2010 Life With Archie looks at two diverging timelines – in the first timeline he marries Veronica, in the second he goes with Betty. The book received outstanding critical acclaim, even being nominated for an Eisner (one of the biggest awards for comics) as writer Paul Kupperberg twisted an amazing journey into Archie’s adulthood that ultimately ends the exact same way, no matter which team you were pulling for.

-- Beware – there are spoilers below --

At the end of the run in 2014 the stories converge and Archie takes a bullet to save newly elected US Senator Kevin Keller (the first openly gay character in the Archie Comic Universe). His heroic sacrifice is remembered by the folks of Riverdale as the books time skip one year later where we see Riverdale High is now known as Archie Andrews High School.

These books were sold incredibly well and it set the stage for more adult themes in Archie comics. The kids who had grown up reading those digests were now cynical adults looking for something a little more mature and maybe, just maybe, a little more gruesome as well.

Afterlife with Archie

The last thing most people expected to see shambling around Riverdale was the undead. Understandably so. But during the Life with Archie run artist Francesco Francavilla was tasked with creating a zombie themed variant cover* for the smash hit.

This cover was a resounding success and disappeared from shelves as fast as it could be stocked.

Clearly there was an audience for a darker take on Archie.

And so Francavilla teamed up with writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa for an entire zombie themed book called Afterlife with Archie. It kicks off with the death of Jughead’s dog Hot Dog. Distraught, Jughead begs Sabrina for help. When the teenage witch gives in and uses the Necronomicon to resurrect the pooch, things start to go terribly wrong: Sabrina faces the wrath of her aunts and Hot Dog becomes patient zero for a zombie plague.

The first eight issues completely sold out and Archie Horror was born. There’s even overtures of Afterlife in Riverdale.

If you like Afterlife, check out Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. So it should come as no surprise that I’m a big, big Final Fantasy fan. I can remember being around 8 or 9 and my brother picking up a copy of Final Fantasy VII with his hard earned snow shovelling money. All three of us kids would gather around the warm glow of the CRT TV to watch as my oldest brother got soundly thumped by Sephiroth. This game really started my love of games. Like the Legend of Zelda, it’s one of those games I’ll go back to playing again and again and again.

And of course it launched the veritable titan that is Final Fantasy here in North America. Sure, other Final Fantasy titles preceded this one (The ‘VII’ is the clue there) but nothing stuck out quite like this before. This game alone has several anime adaptations and Square Enix even spun it off into more games like Crisis Core. With a remake in the works, it’s no surprise this game is a favourite of so many people.

It showed off the real power of the Playstation, introduced us to icons of the gaming world like Cloud Strife and Aeris, strung us along with an immersive plot, all set against the near-perfect soundtrack.

Portal

There are some games that whisk players away for hours and hours with deeply engrossing world building, a multitude of side quests, and a whole host of complex characters. Portal is not one of these games, but that’s exactly why it’s on this list.

It’s one of those games that you can thoroughly enjoy even if you aren’t a hardcore gamer willing to sink 100+ hours of your life into it. It’s relatively short, endlessly fun, and will challenge your problem solving ability. I know many very staunch ‘non gamers’ who love Portal thanks to its humour, wit, and superb storytelling prowess.

The game has even become a kind of gaming icon in the pop culture world. You may know the phrase ‘the cake is a lie’ even if you’ve never played Portal. And of course even though she’s devising numerous different horrific ways to off you, you still kind of look forward to hearing from GLaDOS just to find what she’s going to say next.

It may not stand the test of time in the years to come like some of these other games have, and it hasn’t spawned double digit sequels, but it is a charming addition that shows off how a simple concept can make a real impact.

Honestly, narrowing it down to these three was really tough! The new music blends in so seamlessly with all your favourites from the original 1991 film, and in some cases those classic songs get a bit of a boost thanks to unused lyrics from the great late Howard Ashman – Gaston in particular gets to pull on those brand new tidbits that didn’t make the original cut. It gives you something new and unexpected to look forward to all while keeping with the spirit of the music you fell in love with more than 20 years ago.

The stand out new song for me was undoubtedly Evermore, the Beast’s heart wrenching ballad. In fact, it’s been stuck in my head since I saw the movie. It borrows a little bit of the feeling from the stage show as the Beast’s voice slowly and subtly becomes more and more human as the song progresses. For someone who hasn’t had to do a whole lot of singing in his professional career, Dan Stevens shows a lot of promise.

Which brings me to my next point

Performance

Hands down, Josh Gad as LeFou was my favourite. He brings a sense of realism and believability to a role that was largely nothing more than a running gag in the original. LeFou has his own character progression, he has wants and needs, and Josh Gad blends this together with exceptional comedic timing. There’s no doubt why Gad earned that Tony Nomination for The Book of Mormon – he completely steals the show with his rendition of Gaston.

And oh what a guy that Gaston! Luke Evans steps into the red coat and gives his all as the heavy on brawn, light on brain villain. He’s slippery, and a little more devious than the original. Another actor with an impressive musical pedigree in London’s West End - when he leads the mob up to the Beast’s castle, I could feel my heart racing. What a performance!

Dan Stevens as the Beast is also mighty impressive, especially given the fact he was weighed down with a 40 lbs muscle suit and wearing stilts for most of his performance. Pulling off the ballroom dance alone must have been a monumental undertaking. He’s vicious, charming, and at times dangerous – not unlike his character is Legion. He brings far more humour to Beast than I remember in the original, and it’s easy to see how Belle would fall for him.

Emma Watson actually gave one of my least favourite performances in the movie – she felt at times tepid, but that could easily be accounted for by my love of the original portrayal.

Overall the actors managed to capture the spirit of the original cartoon, while still finding ways to ground their characters in reality. They felt like believable people instead of just caricatures of traditional kids’ movie tropes.

Overall Impression

The film is a perfect re-imagining for people who can remember falling in love with the original while still standing on its own feet so kids can also be sucked into the beautifully crafted world of magic, talking clocks, and suave candlesticks.

Die hard fans of the original might find the small changes too hard to swallow, but for the rest of us it’s well worth the price of the ticket.

I know I’ll be seeing it again

4/5 Enchanted Roses

Images courtesy Disney

It looks like Chris Evans is getting ready to ride off into the MCU sunset, but who - if anyone - will take over as Cap?

As far as the Marvel Cinematic Universe is concerned, Chris Evans is Captain America, but that could all change.

Evans originally signed on for six appearances as Steve Rogers and he’ll have met his obligation pretty soon – he’s started his very strict workout preparations for Avengers Infinity War and Avengers 4 which will shoot back to back next month. Should someone else take up where Steve Rogers left off? If so, who?

Here’s my take on it, but beware there are potential spoilers from the comics.

There are already at least two characters poised to take over if Steve Rogers decides to walk off into the sunset –Sam Wilson AKA Falcon and Roger’s best buddy Bucky Barnes both took over the gig in the comics.

If they are going to replace Cap, my money is on one of these two.

Anthony Mackie as Falcon and Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes in Captain America: Civil War - Photo Courtesy Marvel Studios/Disney

I would love to see Sam take it up because up to this point his character hasn’t really been well fleshed out. We see very little of Falcon, and when we do it’s usually either for a quick quip or to act as a listening post for Steve Rogers. Seeing them finally give him his due would be a breath of fresh air. There’s a lot to dig into with Falcon – not only was he a military combatant, through the comic history he was a social worker for inner city youths and in The Winter Soldier he was leading a support group for people living with PTSD. He would be the perfect replacement to lead the Avengers balancing both the raw brawn and the brain needed.

And let’s not ignore the elephant in the room – up to this point the MCU is…well, let’s just say it’s not very diverse.

Right now I don’t think Bucky Barnes is ready to take up the mantle quite yet. He’s still deeply entrenched in the Winter Soldier storyline and has to worry about saving himself before he can worry about helping to save the world. As much as I think Sebastian Stan would rock the role, I think we need more Bucky learning how to be himself again. Personally, I’d love to see a short spin off series with Bucky and Natasha Romanoff. Civil War gave a subtle wink to the pair’s sordid past, and I really hope they expand on that. Give me a short Netflix series run on Black Widow and Winter Soldier – that’s all I ask.

And as for America Chavez and the Young Avengers taking over for the original MCU Avengers in Phase Four, I just don’t see it happening. We haven’t been introduced to any of the characters yet and I think we’ll be a little too busy, you know, fighting Thanos over the Infinity Stones. Too bad though – I think fans would really dig Kate Bishop as Hawkeye.

So what do you think? Do you agree with my pick? Or do you think they’ll lay the shield to rest for good – it’s not like Marvel has a shortage of characters to bring in.

Photos courtesy Marvel Studios/Disney

James Cordon invited stars of the upcoming Beauty and the Beast film to be his guest for a special performance.

The live action version of Beauty and the Beast will finally come to theatres this weekend and a lot of people are beyond excited. He’s a man fighting down an almost uncontrollable rage, so it’s no surprise the character was tapped for an R rated experience.

Given the overwhelming success of Deadpool, I’m glad the studios had enough faith to trust director James Mangold to inject just enough gore without turning this into some kind of over the top slash fest. Superhero movies are not solely the realm of children, nor do I think they should be. There are so many great stories touching on really heavy topics. On the surface it might be a plucky group of mutants out to save the world, but scratch the surface and those stories stand for tough, real world questions we’re dealing with in the real world today.

And that’s just the thing – from the looks of things the violence in the movie isn’t done just for the sake of gratuitous violence. So instead of making uncomfortable small talk, why not give a gift that will help alleviate a little of that awkward tension.

Ticket to Ride is a great game if you’ve got a wide range of ages – it’s very easy to learn, but even the grown ups will have fun trying to outdo each other. You’ll collect cards, try to build up your train empire, and claim railway routes between countries and cities all while also trying to assemble the longest route. If you’ve ever had the longest road sniped from you during a game of Settlers of Catan, you know how competitive this can get. I don’t suggest playing this on a table that can easily be flipped.

If you’re an older family games like Werewolf and Resistance are great.
