Stratford police are warning the public about a credit card scam making the rounds.
STRATFORD - Stratford police are warning the public about a credit card scam making the rounds.
Two people from the Festival City were contacted over the phone by a man who told them their Visa Card had been compromised. The caller then asked for their credit card number.
Both complainants were wise enough to not provide this information, but indicated that they received a lot of pressure to do so by the caller. The Stratford Police would like the public to be aware of this incident to help prevent anyone falling victim to this latest scam.
It is important to remember that scammers are constantly changing their tactics and will pressure you in many different ways to try to get you to provide your personal information, or give up your hard-earned money.
In general, only trust calls that you initiate and never give up your personal information to someone on a phone call that
you did not make; the same can be said over email, text message, or any social media platform.
In regards to this, or any other credit card scam, ask if you can return the phone call. If it is a scam the caller will likely try to keep you on the phone. End the call as quickly as possible and call the customer service number listed on your credit card to enquire if the call was legitimate and to inform your credit card company of the incident, after which they will likely monitor the activity on your card as a precaution.
Lastly, if you have received a call of this nature, please report it to the Canadian AntiFraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501, or if you have received a loss as a result of the scam, contact the Stratford Police at 519-271-4141.
