Corporate Sign Upsets Cemetery Visitors in Tillsonburg

A new sign at the Tillsonburg cemetery has some residents filing complaints with town council. The new sign (in photo below), which was installed last year cost $3500 and features the town's logo. Several residents complain that the new logo is too corporate, after noticing the old, precast letters (in photo on right) were removed after the town noticed they were crumbling and not worth repairing. Chair of the Cemetery Sign Sub-committee Paul DeCloet says a simple change of signage has touched a nerve with some in the community. "Some of the people, particularly those with family members interned in the cemetery, or perhaps have friends are somewhat attached. You know, there's an emotional aspect to the cemetery that seems to have come alive with this issue." DeCloet says residents are now being asked to fill out a simple survey about the signage. "Do you want the old sign back, or do you like the new one? It's as simple as that. The other aspect of the questionnaire is: do you have any other suggestions to improve the cemetery? That part could play a fairly important role." Residents have until August 9 to respond. One of the options being considered by the town would be dressing up the new sign with some landscaping. The new sign (top), and new sign concept (bottom) are seen in the photos below. Click here to fill out the survey.
