COVID-19 Testing Numbers Down in Southwestern Public Health Region

The Southwestern Public Health Unit is currently averaging about 4,000 COVID-19 tests per week.

OXFORD COUNTY - Local Public Health officials are encouraging people to get tested for COVID-19, even if you only have 1 symptom.

Medical Officer of Health Dr. Joyce Lock says testing is down significantly in our region.

"It is crucial that people get tested so we have an idea of what is going on, especially now that we are on the search for any of those new variants. So we are asking people, even if they have really mild symptoms and they think it won't make any difference at all, to please go and get tested."

The Health Unit right now is averaging about 4,000 tests a week, last month they were doing around 6,000 tests. Dr. Lock says they aren't really sure why testing is down.

"It could just be that fewer people are getting sick and so fewer are going for testing and we certainly hope that is the driving force. On the other hand it may just be that everybody is getting a little used to COVID and they are not so worried about it anymore and just aren't getting tested even if they have symptoms."
