Woodstock City Council has named Cowan Park as the new home field to the Woodstock Wolverines.
WOODSTOCK - The Woodstock Wolverines will have a new home field.
The decision was approved during a city council meeting on February 7th.
Mayor Trevor Birtch says the field will be at Cowan Park.
"What this will do is re-purpose one of the soccer fields at Cowan Park and turn it into what would be called a multi-use field. So it can be the new home for football and of course it would be open not to just to the Wolverines, but to other community groups that want to play football, but in accordance with council's policy when programs revolve around youth we give them a priority sequence. So, in essence it'll be the Wolverines' home field."
Birtch adds the facility will be utilized all year-round.
"They have been utilizing city assets at College Ave School and unfortunately unable to some times use the facilities there, the washrooms etc. And that is a great field, and it has bleachers and scoreboards, but without that ability to always have guaranteed access to change rooms and washrooms there is a bit of a hindrance. So what this will allow is a proper upkeep of a field, and this is actually the site where the Wolverines do their practices. So in their offseason when they're not out playing on real turf, they're inside Cowan Park on the indoor field practicing right now, so this will all concentrate them in one spot."
The Wolverines are currently using the field at College Ave School, but the work will begin after the soccer season has ended.
The field will be managed and monitored by city workers, saving the city money and preventing them from having to hire resources.
