CRA Scam Hits Woodstock Again

Police are warning the public about a popular phone scam making the rounds in Woodstock.

WOODSTOCK - If you have received a suspicious phone call from the Canada Revenue Agency, you could be the victim of a phone scam.

Woodstock police have received calls from the public saying they are being threatened by people claiming to be the CRA demanding money or they will face being arrested. Sargeant Don Mackenzie of Woodstock Police offers this advice.

"If they try and get pin numbers from your bank account, anything of that nature, personal information, do not provide it over the telephone, the CRA already has the information that they require from you so they don't need to ask those kinds of questions."

The phone call should be reported if you did in fact provide personal information to avoid being defrauded or becoming a victim of identity theft

Woodstock Police offer the following tips to make sure you do not become a victim of fraud:

- Do not call these people back
- Do not provide any personal information such as social insurance number, credit card number, bank account information or passport numbers.
- If you are pressured to access a fraudulent website don't
- The CRA will never ask you to provide personal information by email
- Be suspicious if asked to pay taxes or fees on lottery or sweepstakes winnings – this is a scam
- Never share access codes, user ID, or PIN numbers
