Education Worker Strike Begins Today

Early childhood educators, educational assistants, custodians, and office administration staff will hit the picket lines today. All TVDSB and LDCSB schools will be closed during the strike action.

OXFORD COUNTY - All TVDSB and LDCSB schools will be closed today and students will participate in remote learning, as education workers across Ontario hit the picket lines.

This includes the 55,000 members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees and the eight thousand education workers represented by the Ontario Public Service Employees Union who will be striking in solidarity.

The Ford Government passed legislation yesterday in order to force a contract on the CUPE members, making strike action illegal. This deal includes a 2.5 percent salary increase for workers making less than $43,000 annually and a 1.5 percent salary increase for everyone else.

The union originally asked for annual increases of 11.7 percent to keep up with inflation, so it introduced a counter-offer earlier this week. However, Education Minister Stephen Lecce stated that he won't negotiate until the union cancels the strike. Mediation between the two sides ended yesterday.

The TVDSB and the LDCSB are among several school boards across the province closing their schools due to the strike action. CUPE is advising parents in those school boards to make childcare arrangements for next week.
