Dr. Joyce Lock says vaccine mixing is a safe and standard practice for immunization, so you shouldn't be stuck on a specific brand name when you go for your second dose.
OXFORD COUNTY - Southwestern Public Health encourages vaccine mixing as we try to get everyone fully vaccinated.
Local Medical Officer of Health Dr. Joyce Lock says you shouldn't be concerned over brand names.
"Health Canada, The Ontario Ministry of Health and the National Advisory Council on Immunization endorse the idea that the mRNA vaccines, such as Moderna and Pfizer are interchangeable. The manufacturer or the brand doesn't matter. The same authorities have also endorsed the use of mRNA vaccine as a second dose, following a first dose of AstraZenece."
Dr. Lock says you will have full protection if you decide to mix and match vaccines.
"This approach offers a robust immune response and offers protection against the high risk Delta variant, which is very contagious and makes people more ill than the original virus."
She adds that we must not get stuck on a brand.
"Vaccine mixing is a safe and standard practice for immunization when there are supply concerns. From a biological perspective, these are equivalent vaccines, the brand name doesn't determine the quality of the product you are receiving or how effective it will be."
