Firefighters credit a working smoke alarm to limiting damage and saving a family in Woodstock after an early morning fire.
WOODSTOCK - Nobody was injured after an early morning blaze in Woodstock on Sioux Crescent.
Crews were called to the fire at 5:44 on Thursday morning. Upon arrival no flames or smoke were visible as the homeowner had already doused the flames using a dry chemical extinguisher on the fire. Firefighters did have to put out a few hot spots.
It's estimated the blaze caused about $18,000 in damage to the home and it was an electrical fire.
Firefighters credit a working smoke alarm that alerted the family to the fire, allowing them to douse it with extinguisher limiting the damage and making sure nobody was injured. This alarm was in addition to the Fire Code required working smoke alarms on each level.
"The 2015 Fire Prevention Week message encouraged residents to hear the beep, where you sleep and add additional smoke alarms to the bedrooms for enhanced fire safety", said Deputy Fire Chief Jason Whitely. "This incident is a great example of that initiative."
The Woodstock Fire Department would like to remind residents that smoke alarms are required on every level of your home, including outside of all sleeping areas. Smoke alarms provide you with an early warning should a fire occur and can allow advance time for you and your family to safely escape.
Test your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms today and ensure they are working!
