Finkle St. in Woodstock turned into a showcase for electric vehicles this afternoon. An "Eco Run" from Brighton to London stopped in the Friendly City for lunch. It's a tour of electric vehicles, being driven by some of the country's top automotive journalists. Woodstock Hydro also helped provide power to a charging station. Lorne Hedges of Schneider Electric explains. "These are permanently installed charging stations but we've set them up for mobile use for this tour. So we've got them plugged in with help from Woodstock Hydro today to provide power to the stations. That's allowing us to recharge the vehicles here in town." Woodstock Hydro Manager Jay Heaman explains what they hope to learn. "We see it as a huge opportunity, but also a threat to our distribution system. Electric vehicles are going to be the wave of the future, but our system may not have been designed for it. They're able to charge 6 vehicles while they're here and we're also recording the load profile on the system." Woodstock Hydro is looking at purchasing an electric vehicles for its fleet later this year. Auto Journalist for the National Post Clare Dear says the vehicles have been performing well. "It was quite revealing to be able to drive and feel it. The pure electrics have very strong torque right from the get-go. It sort of dispels that golf cart image that some people have." The three-day tour finishes this afternoon at the new Fanshawe Technology Centre in London.
