Steven "Oopee" Gilbert wants to be the voice for young-working families in the Friendly City.
WOODSTOCK -- Longtime Woodstock resident Steven "Oopee" Gilbert wants to bring the voice of young, working families to City Council.
Gilbert, who has worked for the Woodstock Post Office for a number of years, has a list of items that he sees as a priority for council including revitalizing the downtown to grow family entertainment, giving new life to Lions Pool and expanding what the potential Woodall development could possibly offer. "The Woodall lot, I see it as ball diamonds but I also see bigger things like another skatepark up there, a football field for Woodstock Minor Football, just different things. We've got a big area up there, we need to utilize it, make it family-friendly."
With four City Councillor positions up for grabs and eleven candidates in the running, Gilbert hopes he can bring a new voice to local politics. "I'm not a politician, I'm a family-man, I'm a working man, working-class, working family; our voice isn't being heard in the city and I just want to bring that voice to City Council."
"I want to give people that don't normally go vote, I want to give them an option of somebody to vote for. You see a lot of people, they're disenfranchised with it, they say all politicians are the same, it doesn't matter well I want to be the guy that makes it matter. I want to be the guy that comes in that people can talk to."
Gilbert says his number one concern for council in the next term would be transparency and feels it's time for "behind the door deals" to end.
