Fire Warning

Woodstock Fire warning against having electrical cords covered by clothes or curtains

OXFORD COUNTY- We all do it, use our laptops on our bed, have powercords covered with clothes or blocked by curtains. By doing these things, the devices and power cords are not getting the air circulation they need to keep the device temperature down. After an extended period of time temperatures can rise hot enough to ignite nearby items.

At the beginning when your device is new you should get an indication of how hot it gets when in use. If you notice your device becoming too hot to touch, Woodstock Fire Prevention officer Jeff Slager says to "discontinue use and unplug it." Slager adds that you can also check for consumer recalls, contact the manufacturer and notify them of the problem or call the Woodstock Fire department as a last resort.

Slager says similar occurrences with devices not receiving proper ventilation have been known to cause fires. Using your device improperly can also affect it's life time.
