Franco-Ontarian Flag Day in Woodstock

Sainte-Margeurite-Bourgeoys and Notre-Dame Catholic French-language schools held a special ceremony today for Franco-Ontarian Flag Day.

WOODSTOCK - Sainte-Margeurite-Bourgeoys and Notre-Dame Catholic French-language schools held a special ceremony today for Franco-Ontarian Flag Day.

Joseph Pickard, the Director of Education at Conseil Scolaire Catholique Providence, says these celebrations happened across the Province.

"There are celebrations going on all across our school board on the 25th of September. Also across the province of Ontario because it's a very important day for Franco-Ontarians."

In Woodstock they had a flag raising ceremony at the Ste-Marguerite Bourgeoys. It featured speeches from the principal, Woodstock Mayor Trevor Birtch and included over 550 students.

Pickard tells us about the iconic flag and what it represents.

"There are two colours; there's green and white. The symbol behind that is the green represents the summer and white represents winter in Ontario. There are two other elements in there; there's the trillium, the official flower of the province of Ontario and the fleur-de-lis which is the symbol of francophone heritage."

The first Franco-Ontarian flag raising was held at Laurentian University in Sudbury back in 1975, but it didn't receive official status from the province until 2001.
