Getting Rid of Those Freshman Fears

High school can feel like a big steps for kids, and they might be feeling anxious in this last week before they start a new chapter in their lives.

Heading back to school can be a scary time for some students and one of the hardest transitions is entering high school for the first time.

With this in mind the Thames Valley District School Board created the High School Here I Come Program. They help students adjust to high school by letting them speak with teachers, getting a chance to visit their schools, and ask questions. The program ran for four days in the third week of August and was well attended. But even if you couldn't make it out to the sessions it's not too late for some friendly advice.

Program Supervisor Paul MacGregor tells Heart FM the best advice they can give students heading into high school:

"The biggest advice we would give is to tell kids as soon as you get concerned about any issue, whether it's an academic one or a social problem, to seek assistance right away. Reach out don't think you can just kind of overlook this and eventually it will get better. What you need to do is address the problem and find help from a teacher or a guidance councillor or even a peer support person."

MacGregor says kids are anxious heading into High School for a variety of reasons.

"How do I make it to class? How do I use a lock? And a big thing we like to emphasize to the kids is organization; we tell them it's your responsibility now to be on top of all your studies and balance all of your classes - that can be a big challenge for students. They are concerned about that and they are also concerned about bullying."
