"But in Oxford County alone, thousands of people go without. Folks are on their own to manage chronic conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure."
Official Opposition NDP Leader Andrea Horwath was in Ingersoll this morning to throw her support behind funding for Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinics.
She says an NDP Government would put health care as a priority and provide funding for places like the Ingersoll Nurse Practioner-Led Clinic.
"There is a wonderful clinic here, they have been desperate to expand because they know the need in the community is growing and unfortunately they have not been successful in getting money out of the Liberal Government or the Conservative Government, so I have come to I have come to make the commitment to the people of Ingersoll and the surrounding area."
The Clinic has been applying for funds since 2016 and has been denied every time. Horwath says that everyone in Ontario should have easy access to primary care.
"But in Oxford County alone, thousands of people go without. Folks are on their own to manage chronic conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure. People have nowhere to turn when a new health issue arises. And far too often, people end up in the emergency department when they need primary care."
Horwath says an NDP Government would not deny funding to the Ingersoll clinic.
“What I’d do differently is fund more nurse practitioner clinics, better — including the clinic in Ingersoll — and I’d launch an effort to recruit at least 300 more doctors for rural and Northern Ontario so that every family has a health professional in their corner, taking care of them.”
Horwath also wanted to push for the recruitment of more doctors, to give more people in Ontario greater access to primary care.
She was joined by the new Oxford County NDP candidate Lindsay Wilson and the Clinic Manager and Clinic Director of the Ingersoll Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinic.
